The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art is recruiting Gallery Attendants, Docents and Hospitality/Special Event volunteers.
We acknowledge, articulate, and support the vital role of volunteers in achieving our mission. It’s important to us that volunteer roles involve people in meaningful ways that reflect their skills, needs, interests, and backgrounds. We’d be pleased to welcome you as a valued and integral member of the Gallery team.
Gallery attendants are present during the open hours of the Gallery to greet patrons, track attendance and monitor the gallery. Attendants may also occasionally be asked to assist with office duties. No previous art or gallery experience is necessary however an interest in art would be helpful and a willingness to learn is essential. Attendants must be comfortable handling money, processing sales transactions and working in the gallery independently.
Gallery docents interpret art, guide people through the Gallery, encourage dialogue, provide information to visitors, and facilitate understandings about art. During the school year, our docents work with educators leading school groups on tours of the Gallery, animating the collection in dynamic ways for learners of all ages. Our docents also conduct public tours, interpreting the collection and exhibitions through conversations with visitors from around the world.
Hospitality and Special Event
Hospitality & Special Event volunteers help with the many special events we hold during the year, including opening receptions, musical evenings, Artist for Kids print launches, and other events inspired by our current exhibitions. Positions in hospitality involve greeting (information providers,) set-up/take down, coat check, manning of ticket sales tables, serving food and drinks, etc.
